Spring is here, and that means it’s time to head outdoors and soak up some sunshine. I don’t know what the weather was like in your area this winter, but I am so ready for some sunny days. My husband and I love to enjoy nice weather by buying some good food and heading out for a picnic. We bring some books, a blanket, and our picnic basket and camp out under a tree for the day. We’ve done it so often we’ve got our perfect picnic down to a science. I thought it would be fun to share with you.
The staple of our picnic is fresh French bread, creamy brie, tart jam, and thick apple slices. Together, these ingredients make one incredible sandwich. They’re also easy to prepare outdoors, which is a definite picnic win. Just make sure you bring napkins because no one wants to have sticky jam fingers for the rest of the day. The sandwiches pair perfectly with Zevia, our favorite soda. I love that we can enjoy a bubbly drink without any guilt about calories or scary ingredients.
Stonyfield Petite Crème is the ideal picnic side. They’re easy to transport, hard to make a mess out of, and so delicious. Josh and I each packed our favorite flavor and enjoyed spoonful’s while lounging on the grass at the park.
Since moving to Omaha, we’ve explored a lot of parks. Our favorite is Elmwood Park. It’s centrally located, huge, and has the perfect mix of trees and open spaces. We can lie around, go for a walk, and watch all the other visitors passing by on Dodge Street.
Before we pack up our picnic to head home for the day, we make sure to enjoy dessert. Chocolate desserts are my favorite, but I worry about packing chocolate for a picnic in case it melts in the sun. I’ve found a compromise with chocolate covered strawberries. There’s the chocolate to satisfy my sweet tooth, but also fruit to keep the chocolate from losing its shape. The fruit also keeps me from feeling too guilty for the indulgence.
Picnics are such a fun way to get together with friends and family and just unwind. They’re all about relaxing and enjoying good food while out in nature. They’re also a great way to make memories. So the next time you find yourself with a beautiful spring day and a free afternoon, grab your picnic basket, some good food, and your loved ones! You won’t regret it.
