As a devoted New Hampshire hiker, being on a mountaintop is almost spiritual for me. Looking out over a sea of green, rolling mountains without a house in sight always reminds me that nature knows what it’s doing, and I’m fortunate to witness it and experience its beauty. It always amazes me to think that some of the mountains I’m looking at have been around for millions of years – and because the animals and trees that inhabit them work so symbiotically together, they’ve been around for a very long time, too. I always take a moment to revel in what nature has created.
This is exactly how I feel when I step foot on an organic dairy farm.
There’s nothing like walking through a thick, emerald-green pasture in August. Stopping to pause, you see endless acres of tall grass, flowers, and cows grazing on their lunch. When you think about it – what you’re witnessing is something of a natural miracle. The grasses and plants photosynthesize energy from the sun, which turns into energy rich food for cows, which then turns into nutrition for us – when we drink the cows’ organic milk. In the end, cows in the pasture add nutrients to the soils and grasses as they move along – returning healthy minerals and bacteria and replenishing the fields –and helping them to grow thick and tall. It’s a cycle, and a beautiful one to witness.
Organic farming prohibits toxic persistent pesticides, antibiotics, and GMOs –and instead relies on crop covers, crop rotation, natural pest management, and other ways of growing and producing ingredients in a sustainable fashion.
Why Should You Support Organic Farming?
Supporting organic farming and agriculture is one of the many reasons I love working at Stonyfield, and my passion for it is always brought to life when visiting one of the farms that supplies us with organic milk. Through our yogurt making, we support enough family farms to keep over 200,000 acres of farmland in organic production. This avoids the use of over 200,000 pounds of toxic persistent pesticides and nearly half a million animal drug and hormone treatments annually!
By supporting organic brands and products, you’re supporting a system that helps protect nature.
