Imagine this, you’ve decided to spend the day with family or friends enjoying the great outdoors (in New Hampshire, where Stonyfield is based, this is extremely easy to do). It’s a beautiful Saturday, and you’ve just reached the top of Mount Major overlooking lakes and forests. Feeling a little hungry, you start staking out a spot to stop for a snack. When, out of nowhere, a smiling stranger in a Stonyfield t-shirt offers you a nice cold yogurt!
One day early this summer, that’s just what over 100 hikers experienced when Todd, our Director of Business Planning and Analysis, traded in the spreadsheets for his hiking boots to spread a little Stonyfield love.
Being an extremely efficient kind of guy, Todd’s Mission Action Promise fulfilled all three pillars of Stonyfield’s mission at once: healthy food, healthy people and a healthy planet. He brought along a dozen fellow Stonyfielders and their families for the 3.4 mile loop hike, armed with yogurt, spoons, Stonyfield signs and smiles.
The mountaintop crew met families, groups of friends, even a local Girl Scout troop, and shared the protein-filled organic goodness (perfect for recovery after something like a hike) with everyone they met. Yogurt might not be the first thing you think of to pack in a backpack to eat when you get to the top of the mountain, but it’s a great choice to keep you going the next time you’re looking for a snack with a view.
Inspired by Todd’s drive to share a healthy snack with new friends, here are a few tips for staying powered up when you’re on the go – whether you’re hiking a mountain, or tackling a to-do list:
Veggies and Hummus
From plain and simple to just about every flavor imaginable, hummus (made from the delicious chickpea) is a protein powerhouse sure to charge anything from a mountain descent to a trip to the grocery story to pick up more healthy veggies for dipping. Pack some up for on the go in one of these reusable Preserve cups made from recycled Stonyfield yogurt cups!
My family is a burrito-loving crowd. We always have “emergency” burritos wrapped and ready to go in the freezer. Whip up a batch of brown rice (which your body burns through more slowly than white rice), roasted broccoli for Vitamin C, and a protein of your choice, and wrap it all up with avocado for some healthy fat in a whole wheat wrap and freeze. Defrost in the fridge overnight and you’ll have a cool snack or meal to enjoy the next day.
Pick a nut, any nut, add some dried fruit and the ever-important dark chocolate (make sure it’s dark chocolate and not milk for less sugar and more health benefits) and you have a mix that will keep you going on the trail, at the office, in the car…you get the idea.
While Greek yogurt gets all the attention when it comes to protein levels, our Petite Crème (technically a sweet fresh cheese) has the same amount of protein as Greek and a smoother taste and texture. But, don’t forget about good old fashioned traditional yogurt for a protein boost, too. Our organic yogurt pouches make bringing yogurt along anywhere super easy and mess free. Sure they’re supposed to be for kids, but tell that to the grown-ups around our office who hide them from their own children.
What’s your go-to snack when you’re on the go?
