Gathering the family? Why not gather some data, too?

This little item slipped our notice around Thanksgiving time, but we thought it worthy of mention just the same. It seems that the more we know about our DNA through the wonders of the Human Genome Project, the more we realize how much of our health is genetically dependent. That's why the National Institute of Health and the U.S. Surgeon General's office declared Thanksgiving to be "National Family History Day." It's not too late--you can go to the government's website and either print out a form or download software that will help you track the health issues in your family's ancestry.

Conditions like heart disease, cancer and diabetes--and a host of less common ailments--all have genetic links. It may prove helpful for you or upcoming generations to know exactly who has had what in your family. And--the surgeon general recommends this--every time you gather the extended family, you should all talk about your health and what's changed since the last time you met. (Okay, so that could lead to some pretty interesting discussions at the dinner table!)
