Some brave and creative girls conducted a successful "Girlcott" of the retailer Abercrombie & Fitch, according to this article from Newsday. The group of girls, from Allegheny County Girls, protested a T-shirt being sold by the store with the phrase, "Who needs a brain when you have these?" emblazened across the chest area. The girl group says it was time to send a message to the store: "Stop degrading us."
One female potential employee of the store was quoted as saying it was only "older" people who had a problem with this message. True? Do you know any young women in your life who might just take offense at this?
Emma Blackman-Mathis, the 16-year-old co-chair of the girl group, said, "I just want girls to at least think about everything that they buy. Think about the message that it conveys to themselves and other people when they wear it."
The retailer is certainly not known for its sensitivity and it would appear they intentionally courted controversy with this one. Now they're agreeing to meet with the girls group and work up more "empowering messages" they might put on future t-shirts. Maybe the store could just stop acting like teenagers while they sell to teenagers? Here's another interesting take on the whole thing.
We tip our lids to the strong girls of Allegheny County!
