To sue or not to sue the cheese(burger)makers

The U.S. House has passed legislation that will limit lawsuits against restaurants by customers who might claim that the food at those restaurants made them fat. While proponents of the so-called “Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act” say they want to protect that industry from frivolous suits, the legislation probably has more to do with an overall desire to limit liability for all types of industry. The legislation would limit "lawsuits seeking to blame individual food and beverage producers for a person's weight gain, obesity or related health problems.”

Would you support such legislation? It’s not final yet. It still needs the approval of the U.S. Senate and the signature of the president. The Senate is considering a companion bill, and President Bush already has promised to sign the legislation. A similar bill stalled last year. Meanwhile, another piece of legislation has passed the House, to require restaurants to display the nutritional content of their food. Which of these ideas do you like better? Or should they both pass? Write us with your commetns using the "comment" feature below.
