Well, her website says she's the "most powerful woman in the world" so I guess it's no surprise that in our mini-poll of Strong Women Daily News readers, Oprah Winfrey was the most-nominated for female presidential candidate. We haven't actually heard, however, that Oprah is interested in the job, have you?
Second to Oprah was Hillary Rodham Clinton--again, no surprise there. U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein garnered two mentions and other strong women, including Dr. Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor, got one vote each.
We did have one non-living woman nominated--Eleanor Roosevelt. And we received several nominees for wonderful women who weren't born in this country, making them ineligible to run for the job (which may be a good thing or we'd soon have Mr. Schwarzenegger in the White House).
Click through the "Continue reading" icon below to see all the nominees and the rationale some women were kind enough to include. What do you think? Now that we've nominated these women, would any of them stand a chance at winning? What will it take for this country to nominate and then elect a woman as president and when, oh when, will it happen?
At Stonyfield's Strong Women Saturday event November 6 in Washington D.C. (mere days after the presidential election) Marie Wilson of the White House Project will raise the same question--"What if women ran the country?"

AND THE NOMINEES WERE....
* Oprah, everybody likes her, she's usually on target. She has compassion.
* Oprah--b/c like Michael Moore wrote, she's not corruptable or able to be bought by lobbyists and she's smart, direct, and knows how to bring opposite sides to an agreement.
* Though I love Oprah too, I don't think she should be considered for President because she has no political experience, nor do I get the impression that she would be interested in a position like this
* Oprah, she's so capable
* I would like to see Elizabeth Edwards (wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards) or Oprah
* Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Rodham Clinton are my two favorites
* (U.S. Senator) Diane Feinstein, Oprah, Gayle King - or - of course - me!
* Hilary Rodham Clinton for all the reasons above - her incredible intelligence and unflappability and her ability to work with all people and bring them together
* Hillary for Pres, and Oprah or Eleanor Roosevelt (whom my late mom greatly admired) for VP
* Hilary Rodham Clinton because she's the best choice and it is a real possibility.
* Hillary--b/c she's smart, researches ALL sides of issues rather than just partsan, and does not let her enemies rattle her; she stays the course.
* Dianne Feinstein or (U.S. Senator) Barbara Boxer should be added as well because of their experience, their records, their strength
* Dr. Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor, because she is very intelligent, independent, well spoken and compassionate.
* (Former Texas Governor) Ann Richards--She's experienced, tough, intelligent, fast thinker, decisive, funny...all in all, an incredible woman. I don't know that her health makes this even a posssibility. We lost (former U.S. Senator) Barbara Jordan some years back, she was a very respected and real possibility.
One nominator mentioned these three: Mary Robinson, Shirin Ebadi and Awut Deng Acuil
--Mary Robinson was United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights, but alas was born in Ireland.
--Shirin Ebadi is an Iranian lawyer and human righs activist and once served as president of the city court of Tehran.
--Awut Deng Acuil is a peace activist working in war-torn Sudan.

Posted by: Mari-Catherine at February 20, 2005 03:41 AMI was more than a little disappointed in the presidential prospects provided by your readers. It would make me think that you have a very limited group of readers and would question there source of information from which they would draw these conclusions. Just for fun let's suggest that your readers check out www.townhall.com and look up some incredibly intelliget women such as Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Phyllis Shalafly, Lina Cheves, Star Parker and many more. It never hurt to read another view. Over half of America does!
Posted by: Betty Sue Robie at December 18, 2004 10:13 AMWomen will run the country when the men stay home with the kids, shop for the groceries and worry about the state of the public schools their children are attending. Then and only then will women not only have the TIME to run a campaign, but they'll have the time to get out and vote. MOTHERHOOD IS NOT A PART TIME JOB. It's time men quit thinking it is and pitch in to help.
