The boys were on vacation from school this week, so we have been doing a lot of skiing around the farm. With the recent snowfalls, we have been able to ski almost anywhere, including the swamp located in the northwest corner of the farm. It's always fun to go through the swamp to see what wildlife has crossed through since the last time we were there.
Today we found where an otter had gone in and out of the brook several times. You could see where its long, sleek body had slid over the snow. Yukon, our black Lab, sniffed and rolled where the otter had gone through the hole, back into the water. Several years ago, when we had female yellow Labs, I saw one of them wrestling in the water with an otter. My dog got a very nasty slash under one of her eyes.
An otter's tail trails through the snow, heading toward the drinking fountain.
I can't remember when the woods and fields have been more beautiful to ski through during the winter season. The snow clinging to every tree and bush, the sky just a brilliant blue, and the air so crisp and clean.

Here in Palm Desert,California our snow is 8,000 feet up on top of Mount San Jacinto. Nonetheless, very beautiful..The desert floor is 75 desgrees. I remember childhood days in Illinois farm country with sledding and snow balling with friends. Your Vermont photos do justice to your beautiful land as well. I hope warmer weather comes soon for you.

Enjoy the remainder of the winter. I am sure that everyone is looking forward to spring. But of course the mud covered fields don't photograph quite as nicely!
Posted by: Chris at March 8, 2005 04:10 PMThe pictures of the snow you have are really beautiful. Here, in NJ, we were lucky enough to have at least 6 to 8 inches of the stuff. And I am lucky to be recovering from surgery this week and do not have to venture out doors besides letting the dogs in and out. What a beautiful sight I have from my kitchen window. I have bird feeders in the bushes and the bright red of the cardinals against the white snow is breath taking. Just about as beautiful as your photos. I just didn't have a camera to take photos.
Posted by: Judi Casale at March 3, 2005 11:58 PMThe country always looks so much more beautiful than city snow. It's 3/1/05 now and we're getting quite a few inches of 'that stuff' here in Michigan. I'd much rather be stocked up on groceries and enjoying a country snow-in than a city snow-in any day. The only good thing is the road is plowed only 30 feet from my door! It's so nice to hear of a family enjoying their life as it comes.
Have a great week and have some winter fun for me!
