On a recent visit to Howmars Farm in Franklin, Vermont (nearly at the Canadian border) I waded into the pasture to meet Jonathan's heifers. Most of them were a bit stand-offish, but not Onyx. She sidled right up to me and to the camera with all the air of a curious cat, then proceeded to lick my leg with a very strong, warm tongue! I took that as a good sign.
Look for more notes about a city kid's trip to the farm, coming soon in The Bovine Bugle.

Posted by Blogger Chris at October 4, 2004 12:36 PMI love a friendly cow! We have a red-colored Brangus heifer that we bottle fed and she is both curious and friendly. Her name is "Little Calf" even though she is expecting now and weighs about 900 lbs.. She will rub up to you, gently butt her head against you and lick you with her grey scratchy tongue until you scritch her under the chin or under her halter. We love Little Calf and give her big hugs around her neck while she just stands there looking clueless. What a blessing they are!

My husband of 58 years died Sept 15 and these little emails give me a great deal of pleasure - something to look forward to.
