All About Oikos
Stonyfield Organic
Oikos Greek Yogurt
- The first organic Greek yogurt.
- Incredibly thick, rich and delicious.
- 0% fat.
- Twice the protein of regular yogurt, and less lactose.
Real Greek yogurt, like Oikos, gets its incredible creaminess not from added gums, thickeners or milk fat, but from an old-world straining method that removes the whey (liquid) from the yogurt. This straining process also gives Greek yogurt about twice the protein of regular yogurt, and less lactose.
We make Oikos from fresh, delicious, organic milk from family farms. And we use five live active cultures: S. thermophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus, Bifidus, and L. casei.
It started with windmills
"Oikos" is Greek for "house." It's also a root word for "ecology." We think it's a good name for our organic Greek yogurt, because it reminds us of a time when people's homes were intimately connected with nature, and most foods came from household gardens and family herds.
We make Oikos with organic milk from organic family farmers, who work in harmony with nature.
Our CE-Yo Gary has always been into renewable energy. Having built windmills modeled on ancient Greek technology, he traveled to Greece with his wife, Meg, to check out some windmills and sample a little Greek yogurt. While he liked the windmills, he loved the thick and creamy Greek yogurt.
In 2007, Gary brought our yogurt makers together to craft the first certified-organic Greek yogurt in the US.
"Stonyfield Organic Oikos combines the taste and texture of real Greek yogurt with the benefits of organic," says Gary. "It's healthy food for healthy people and a healthy planet."
Dannon makes a non-organic Oikos
In 2011, Dannon joined our Oikos family and introduced its own non-organic version. Dannon uses a slightly different recipe to produce its delicious, non-organic Oikos Greek yogurt. And our Stonyfield Organic Oikos is still the same authentically-strained, incredibly creamy, organic yogurt it's always been.
