At Stonyfield Organic, it began with seven cows, a simple recipe and the belief that healthy food starts at the source.

We have a few more cows working for us now, but we still produce the whole-milk, plain yogurt that made us famous because of how good it tastes. And it’s never had added sugar; just what naturally occurs in the milk. Just like all of our plain varieties.

Along with the number of dairy herds that supply us, our product lines have expanded over the years to give you and your family more organic flavors and options. We added organic sugar to our natural ingredients along the way to enhance the flavors. But, like our founders, Gary and Samuel, we knew we could do better. We knew we could preserve the flavor and make our organic yogurt healthier for you by reducing how much added sugar we use in all of our yogurts.

After more than two years of research, utilizing our library of culture strains (the living organisms that convert pasteurized milk to yogurt during fermentation), we have developed a formula that reduces tartness and balances the sweetness of yogurt, allowing for sugar reduction without sacrificing our yogurts’ great taste.

We have begun applying this formula to where it matters most — our products for the littlest yogurt eaters:

  • Stonyfield Organic YoBaby yogurts have always been available in plain, unsweetened recipes. Our flavored varieties now have 9 grams or less of sugar, and we’re working to remove any added sugar from all flavor lines.
  • All Stonyfield Organic kids’ cups, squeezers and smoothies also have 9 grams or less of sugar per serving.
    • Our kids’ cups contain as much as 40 percent less sugar than the leading lowfat kids yogurt.
    • Smoothies and squeezers now have 25 percent less sugar than the leading kids’ yogurt.

We’ve made it a priority to reduce added organic sugar across our entire line of products. Our Stonyfield Organic Smooth & Creamy varieties in cups, quarts and low-fat smoothies now have at least 25 percent less sugar than previous recipes. What’s still in each container, though, is what makes yogurt so good for you — essentials like calcium, protein and added vitamin D.

We’ve set ourselves a big goal this year: to lower our overall organic sugar purchasing by 25 percent. Our commitment to reducing sugar in all of our product lines was born from our mission to provide foods that are healthier for you, your family and the planet. We can now do that with less added sugar but with all the great taste and organic benefits that you’ve come to expect and trust.
