Hershey
Choiniere Family Farm
I bet you’re wondering why I was named Hershey. Well, if you look closely at my picture, you'll see that I’m neither black and white like a Holstein, nor honey-brown as is typical of Jerseys. I’m chocolate-brown and white. That’s because I’m half-Jersey and half-Holstein. Nobody expected these markings or colors when I was born on November 7, 2006. Sometimes farmers choose to breed a Holstein cow to a Jersey bull because Jersey calves are smaller when born and can be less stressful on the dam (mother), especially when it is her first time calving.
Because I am half-Jersey and half-Holstein, I am smaller than the other cows. Thanks to my spunky personality, I don’t let my small size get in the way. I’ve been known to push my way into the feed bunk when I’m hungry. I also get easily excited. When Matt and Hannah, my farmer’s kids, come to visit, I like to get them to play by running, kicking, and jumping. They have to be careful, though, that I don’t accidentally kick them.
