Six live cultures
The unique blend of six live active cultures* in our Stonyfield yogurt includes the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus, which has been clinically shown to:
- help increase probiotic culture levels in the gut;
- help strengthen the immune system;
- help support the body’s natural resistance to harmful bacteria;
- enhance the activity of natural killer cells—key components of the immune system that are known to decrease as we grow older.
All yogurts contain the starter cultures Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. While some major-brand yogurts contain only one or two additional cultures, we add four more natural probiotics to our Stonyfield yogurts*, for a total of six:
- Lactobacillus bulgaricus
- Streptococcus thermophilus
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Bifidus
- Lactobacillus casei
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
*Our Oikos Organic Greek yogurt contains five live active cultures. Our Stonyfield Greek Style yogurt contains three.
More about probiotics
Probiotic cultures, also known as "probiotics" and "beneficial bacteria," are micro-organisms that naturally live in your digestive tract, but need regular replenishing. Antibiotics, poor nutrition, surgery, stress, alcohol, smoking, pollution and aging can all reduce the amount of beneficial bacteria in your intestine, causing your immune system to decline.
You can replenish and maintain a healthy balance of the beneficial bacteria in your intestine by eating a cup of our yogurt each day, with each of our servings giving you more than one billion cultures. Clinical studies in which subjects consumed the amount of L. rhamnosus in one serving of our yogurt showed significant improvement in immune indicators known to decline with age.
You cannot overdose on probiotics, and they’re safe for babies. One study found a lower incidence of eczema in infants receiving L. rhamnosus.
