Finding organic food and products is getting easier and easier, partly because the organic market is growing so rapidly and partly thanks to technology.
Below are five smartphone and tablet apps that will help you find and utilize the best healthy products and ingredients.
Fooducate: The perfect grocery store companion, Fooducate allows you to scan the barcode of nearly any food and see its nutrition “grade,” so you know whether or not its a healthy choice. In addition to their iPhone and Android apps, Fooducate offers an Allergy & Gluten Free Diet Tracker as well as a Diabetes Nutrition Tracker. While not specifically focused on organic food, this app will surely help further your “fooducation.”
Locavore: This app uses a GPS to find local, in-season food in your area. Locavore pinpoints nearby farmer’s markets, farms and grocers that sell the produce and products you love. Locavore tells you what fruits and vegetables are in season wherever you are and offers seasonal recipes so you can make the most of the food you buy.
The Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides: If you’ve heard of the “Dirty Dozen” but can never remember what fruits and veggies are on the list, this app is for you. See which produce contain the most pesticides, as well as which contain the least. Next time you’re at the store wondering whether to choose organic or conventional celery, call on The Environmental Working Group’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides for help.
Simply Organic Recipes: This app has over a thousand organic recipes, plus personalized shopping lists and meal planning tools you can use at home or right in the grocery store. The Simple Organic iPhone app – developed by the brand Simply Organic – can also direct you to grocers in your area carrying organic products. Not feeling inspired or unsure what you’re in the mood for? Spin the random recipe finder and see what recipe you land on – it could quickly become your family’s new favorite.
Organic Valley: Really want to “know your food?” Get the Organic Valley app, which allows you to scan any Organic Valley barcode and receive detailed information about production, pasteurization and nutritional value. The “Who’s Your Farmer” component introduces you to the farm where your product originated, so you can learn about the family who produced your food and see how your purchase supports family farms and the local economy. This app even has a game feature, in which kids can learn about farming and food transparency through play.
