Last summer we were looking for a family that is a lot like us – a family committed to a healthy, organic lifestyle. We were looking for the Organic Family of the Year… and we found them! Meet the Kim family from Florida.
We first met the Kims through their Organic Family of the Year contest entry and recently had the chance to speak with Zoe Kim about her family and their love of organic.
Stonyfield: Introduce us to your great family!
Zoe Kim: My husband Sonny is an active duty member of the Air Force and I’m really fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom for our 2 wonderful children, who are 5 and 3 years old. We love to meet new people, make new friends and share our desire to eat well and stay healthy. We feel so blessed and fortunate to have so many resources to care for our family.
SF: When did you and your family first learn about organic foods?
ZK: While I was studying horticulture, I saw first- hand the array of chemicals used on the produce we eat. But it wasn’t until about six years ago that we started to regularly purchase organic food products. We started off by purchasing organic milk and it grew from there. People say, “a baby changes everything” and that was certainly the case for us, for the better! It deepened our commitment to take care of our family as best we are able to.
SF: And what made you decide to incorporate organic into your lifestyle?

ZK: After reading up on anything that had to do with pregnancy I knew I could not drink ‘regular’ milk any longer. The list of things that could harm a baby not yet born or a baby being breast fed is pretty substantial. Children are also 4 times more likely than adults to be harmed by exposure to pesticides and hormones. I also think that many people can be harmed when a business puts profits too far ahead of keeping people and our environment healthy.
SF: Why do you continue to make purchasing organic foods a priority?
ZK: My precious children is why! We want to give our children the best in every way to have a healthy life. I think many people just don’t realize what is in the food they are eating. Many of us have become removed from food production – we don’t see what goes into growing fruits, vegetables, and grains, and raising animals for food. There are so many excellent reasons to feed your family organic! The United Kingdom’s Soil Association published a brief list of 10 reasons to eat organic food.
Thanks to the Kim Family for sharing their story – we’re always excited to meet families who love organic as much as we do.
