Robyn O’Brien has been called many things – “food’s Erin Brockovich”, financial analyst and author – but Robyn’s greatest roles are as a mother of four and the founder of the AllergyKids Foundation. Robyn brings compassion, insight and detailed analysis to her research on the health of America’s families and its food system.
Robyn shares her thoughts about getting to know your food with us.
The truth is that I didn’t want to know my food. It was hard enough feeding four kids with limited time and a limited budget. But life has a funny way of teaching you lessons, and when one of my kids had an allergic reaction over breakfast, I was suddenly forced to learn about the ingredients in the foods that I was feeding my family. And while some might consider it a rude awakening, today I am so grateful for this newfound knowledge as it taught me how to better protect the health of the people that I love. And that is a gift.
I am often asked what has been the hardest part about changing the way I feed my family. And it’s a fair question, because it’s not every day that you go from nuking nuggets and serving up prepackaged mac and cheese to actually cooking for four little (and picky) eaters. Breaking our addiction to fast and “convenient” food was hard. Serving up prepackaged meals was easy. Or so I thought. Until the health of my children started to suffer.
When I began to pay attention, I realized how food illiterate I’d become, I learned that we use ingredients in children’s foods in the US (like genetically engineered toxins, artificial growth hormones and dyes) that were either never allowed for use or have been removed from children’s foods in other developed countries. That double standard hit like a bowling ball.
Why hadn’t we placed the same value on the lives of the American children that has been placed on the lives of kids in other developed countries?
When I realized that our American corporations were formulating their products differently for eaters in other countries, I also then realized that they could do the same thing here. We weren’t asking them to reinvent the wheel, just to place the same products on our grocery store shelves.
After all, if certain ingredients aren’t being used in children’s foods in other countries, is it too much to ask for our corporations to do the same thing here? Sure there might be that little naysayer in your head that asks “Who are you to do this?” But hope is the knowledge that change is possible, even when it seems hard to imagine. And each and every single one of us brings unique skills and talent to the world that no one else possesses.
You are a parent, a brother, a child, a sibling, a grandparent, an American who deserves for these ingredients that have the potential to cause harm to be either labeled or removed from the foods we eat here, too, and you have extraordinary insight and talents. You have the ability to create change in the health of your family.
So surround yourself with those that inspire you, be grateful for those who support you, and remember not to make “the perfect” the enemy of “the good”.
Give yourself permission to do what you can, where you are, with what you have, because this is about progress not perfection. And remember, you’ve been here before. Remember when you learned how to ride a bike? You were brave, you were strong, you saddled up and tried again and again until you were off and rolling.
You can do the same thing here. Only this time, love is your rocket fuel.
The first step to take is to get rid of the mindset that you have to do something perfectly or not at all. This is about progress not perfection. None of us can do everything, but all of us can do something when it comes to making healthy changes. So pick one thing to get started, like opting for organic milk (and opting out of the milk that contains things like artificial growth hormones) or trying to cut back on the artificial colors (since they are not used in kids’ products in other countries). There is so much that we can do to create the changes we want to see in the health of our families if we give ourselves permission to do it in a unique way and at a pace that works.

Thanks for the suggestions you are giving on this site. Another thing I’d really like to say is the fact getting hold of copies of your credit report in order to inspect accuracy of any detail is one first measures you have to undertake in credit restoration. You are looking to clear your credit profile from harmful details faults that ruin your credit score.

As a high school teacher, it is hard to find material that isn’t biased that is useful in constructing meaningful understanding. I have never heard of the Robyn person, but I look forward to reading her work, and if it indeed contains what it appears to contain, using it to help the next generation live better! I too have recently given myself permission to take the baby steps to feed my family better. Our son is only 4 and it’s not too late to put an end to the over-processed garbage we all had been eating. Up until recently my husband was addicted to orange Kool-Aid. He grew up in a household, like myself, where the majority of the groceries were purchased in the ‘middle’ of the store in boxed and canned formats. Organic, we’ve discovered, is not too expensive, especially if you buy in reasonable quantities and don’t waste what you’ve brought home. It’s slightly challenging in our community; there tends to be a lot of the attitude, “Well, everybody’s going to die of something, I’m going to enjoy my life & eat whatever I want…” I used to subscribe to that belief myself. But what we eat has such a direct impact on our quality & quantity of life. Why would anyone want to risk an unhealthy, disease-ridden life, accompanied by a shortened life expectancy, based on the notion that fatty, sugary, chemically-processed fast food is something they can’t live without? Is it really worth it?

She is so right! I, too, am like Robyn and had no idea what I have been eating all these years. And now, I’m slowly changing our foods and trying to get my grown children to eat right and start feeding their children the right foods. But it is a slow progression as they are, too, addicted to those fast microwave meals and fast food. And I live in an area that is not a “farming” area, so I have to buy some foods from a grocery store that is not organic. Also, there is the cost. But slowly, I am changing all of that into healthy food and learning like Robyn! Thank you for this article!
Last year, I learned more about ingredients that annoy my bronchial condition. After eliminating as much engineered food as possible, there was marked improvement. I have gone further by flushing out info from healthcare providers. I have this habit of finding out what I need, checking out the specialists myself, and getting the info to my primary, so I can have referrals. At times, doctors act like I am a thorn in their sides, but it is my body they are supposed to treat. After a malignant tumor was removed from my gut, reality hit me in the face. What I have suspected for some time is that big business is polluting our environment. One clue is how food tastes. We gave up super market hamburger meat years ago. Recently, I have tried Angus beef. Now, once or twice a week, I will have a hamburger. Sell me chicken, eggs, veggies, you name it, but leave out the growth hormones, pesticides, enriched flour, engineered fructose, sucrose or any other contaminants, thank you. The Certified Organic label does not cost that much. If pennies are pinchy, hold off on buying the latest iPhone. Your family’s health is worth it.
Yes, organic crops may be grown in fields with “legacy” pesticides that may take many decades to “wash out” of the system, but the concentrations will still be less than in non-organic foods grown under the same conditions adn will not contain more modern pesticides which break down more quickly in teh envronment but stil pose health hazards to us and our children. As Ms. O’Brien says “The first step to take is to get rid of the mindset that you have to do something perfectly or not at all.” Organic crops grown on fields with legacy pesticides are stil better than non-organic foods likely grown in similar fields.
Recently in the news there was a report of a study done by Dartmouth about the discovery of organic brown rice syrup, grain and flour being high in arsenic. We’ve heard reports too of organic apples/apple juice being contaminated with arsenic. It seems the arsenic comes from soil tainted by pesticides used years ago. How do we find out what foods are grown in tainted soil? What other foods, organic or not, are contaminated? I’m sure there are more!

It’s important for people to understand that arsenic is present everywhere in the environment – in air, soil, water, and foods. Because of this, exposure to arsenic can come from a variety of dietary sources, including fruits, fruit juice, vegetables and other grains.
Despite how the media has been covering this recent story, the presence of arsenic is a problem with the entire food system – not just organic food – and there currently are no standards or limits for arsenic in food. That’s why the researchers of the the study, the Organic Trade Association (OTA) and others are now insisting that the FDA and EPA take action to enforce limits to arsenic in our food supply. It’s also why it can be difficult to find out levels of arsenic present in any particular food.
We agree with Jennie that since organic farmers don’t use arsenic-laden herbicides (or any chemical herbicides for that matter), organic farming is part of the solution to reducing the amount of toxins in our environment, including arsenic and persistent pesticides known to create health problems.
We support the OTA’s efforts in seeking information about arsenic in our food supply and taking steps toward a standard for all food. We applaud your efforts to get to know your food.
