Introducing the release of a great new e-book on genetically engineered foods!
Label It Now – What You Need to Know About Genetically Engineered Foods written by Gary Hirshberg, our CE-Yo; Britt Lundgren; our Director of Organic and Sustainable Agriculture; and Charles Benbrook, the Organic Center’s Chief Scientist launched today.
This book cuts through the complicated scientific debate about genetically modified food to put forth a simple premise: We all have a right to know what’s in our food. Genetically engineered foods have rapidly become a part of our food supply, with little oversight or scrutiny. Without a requirement to label foods containing these ingredients, we are forced to be guinea pigs in a giant experiment involving our health and the environment. Co-author Gary Hirshberg, CE-Yo of organic leader Stonyfield says “I have witnessed too much carelessness to remain silent. For the sake of our children, our behavior must change.”
At just $2.99, Label It Now is available at iBookstore here and for download on iTunes here. All proceeds from the book go to support of the Just Label It campaign.
Plus, earlier today our CE-Yo Gary Hirshberg spoke about Labels for Genetically Modified Foods on The Diane Rehm Show on NPR. You can listen to the show here.

Can someone tell me if Canola oil (any kind, organic, non organic) is a GMO? I thought that through it’s processing it has to be.
Hi Cammy -
Canola oil is oil made from the seeds of the rape plant. Ninety-three percent of canola/rapeseed grown in US is genetically engineered (GE). Until we have labels on foods produced with GE ingredients, the only way you can know that your canola oil is not GE is to buy organic. You can also search the Non-GMO project site to see if you can find Canola oil bearing their non-GMO label at http://www.nongmoproject.org. We also urge you to join us in the Just Label It campaign and tell the FDA to label genetically engineered foods at justlabelit.org.
Best,
Amy
You beat me to the punch!
Is this book available in non-i-book format? I would gladly buy a hard copy (don’t have any of the readers or software).
Can people outside the US join your Just Label It campaign? I’m in Canada.
GMO = genetically modified organism; in other words, the seed contains a genetic modification. If the seed that was planted was not genetically modified, the plant is not a GMO and cannot become one through processing. On the other hand, if the plant is allowed to go to seed, the seeds will carry the genetic modification, so the plants that grow from those seeds will also be GMOs.
The thing with canola is that a lot of the canola seed that is planted is genetically modified to tolerate the herbicide Roundup (Roundup-Ready canola). Seeds from these genetically modified have “escaped” into nature so there is GM canola growing in fields of farmers who never deliberately planted GM seed, even sometimes in organic farmers’ fields. If you buy non-organic canola oil or a product containing canola oil that does not explicitly indicate it is organic, you are almost certainly eating a GMO. If you buy organic canola oil, it is less likely to contain the GMO but sometimes when they test organic canola oil they find that some GM canola has slipped in. This is extremely unfortunate, because canola oil was a very healthy oil before they started messing with it.
I buy organic canola oil sometimes but tend to use olive or sunflower oil (which they haven’t started modifying… yet!). If I’m buying non-organic products, I do not buy ANYTHING containing canola oil. Same goes for corn oil, cornstarch, soy oil, soya lecithin, non-organic tofu… there are probably more that I can’t think of right now. I think they’re modifying sugar beets now so avoid anything containing beet sugar unless it’s organic. Oh, and I think papaya is modified now too.
also make sure your oil states cold pressed or expeller pressed
I heard you on Diane Rehm, Gary. You did a nice job.
I’d love to review Label It Now for the next issue of The Natural Farmer, which will focus on GMOs. Can you email me a pdf of it for review?
