Life with a CE-Yo
“Slide into bed with an entrepreneur and you wind up cuddling with his business,” says Meg Hirshberg (our CE-Yo’s wife) in the May 2009 edition of Inc. magazine. This is the first of many articles to come in Meg’s new column, “Balancing Acts,” in which she writes about the impact of entrepreneurial business on family life.

Food, Inc. has power to
change thinking on foodThe Daily Kos recently had some chatter about Food, Inc. on their political blog (May 2009). Our CE-Yo, Gary Hirshberg, is mentioned as one of the forward thinking social entrepreneurs included in the film. Various summaries of the film are included, with one stating, “Yes, this is a horror movie, and all the more frightening because it is calm, reasoned, and in many cases quite right.” Also adding, “You’re not likely to see another film this year that has this power to change your thinking and habits…”
In June 2009, The New York Times published an in-depth story about our recent project with Libby and the other 74 dairy cows on Guy Choiniere’s farm in Highgate, Vermont. The article, “Greening the Herds — Trying to Limit Cow Emissions,” discusses one of our company’s latest goals: reducing the methane emissions that come from the cows that provide us with milk. When farmers switch to feed that is more natural for cows to eat — like alfalfa and flax seed — not only do cows burp less, but their milk contains higher quantities of omega-3 fatty acids as well.

In the article, “I Beg Your Pardon? Breeding Cows to Burp Less,” kids are able to learn about our latest project: trying to reduce the methane emissions of the cows that provide us with milk by changing their diet to more naturally occurring feed such as alfalfa and flax seed.
According to First magazine (June 2009), B12 deficiencies are on the rise — caused in part by an increase in gastrointestinal health issues and the drugs that we use to treat them. Having low amounts of B12 can lead to “foggy thinking, debilitating tiredness and mood swings,” claims the magazine. In order to help regain proper amounts of this vitamin, it is suggested that people eat two eight-ounce servings per day of yogurt that contains live active cultures. Our very own Stonyfield Farm yogurt is the suggested product to purchase.
