Birth spacing important for child health

New news out just yesterday has researchers saying it's best to space your babies at least 18 months apart. The study that led them to that conclusion included 11 million births internationally. Apparently, if babies are too close together--or too far apart--it increases the chances of complications such as premature births or low birth weights. One researcher commented that a woman needs to recover "nutritionally" from one pregnancy before having another--pregancy and nursing use up the woman's nutrients.

The findings, of course, have worldwide health implications and suggest that better family planning should be stressed in areas where infant death and disease is common. The full analysis of this huge study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association
