What is climate change?
Although there is still disagreement about the rate and extent of global warming, in recent years overwhelming agreement has emerged within the scientific community that the earth is warming; that the warming is caused primarily by human-induced emissions of gases (largely from the use of petroleum) into the atmosphere; and that warming will continue if we don't reduce these emissions. These “greenhouse gases”, so-called because they trap heat in the same way that glass functions in a greenhouse, have always occurred naturally, but their increasing concentrations due to human activities (such as driving cars, using electricity and other things that use petroleum) is causing additional heat to be trapped, leading to changes in global weather patterns.
