Mission Action Plan

partnership with recycline

Stonyfield Farm is proud to provide financial support to the Action Sports Environmental Coalition,
in collaboration with the Bob Burnquist Foundation.

Bob BurnquistThe Coalition uses the power of celebrity athletes such as Bob Burnquist to help focus attention on environmental issues, especially ones that are affected by action sports such as skateboarding.

Skateboarding is a sport that uses a lot of wood. Several hundred wood-based skateparks are scattered throughout the country. More than 200,000 new wooden decks for skateboarding events are built every month. At the annual X-Games, for example, BMX bike riders and in-line skaters compete on a huge, smooth wooden surface shaped like a swimming pool with one end missing. A BMX stunt park consists of ramps and landings, all made of wood. Skateboarders often compete on a 50-foot-high ramp that lets them take flight. Taken all together, that's a lot of wood and a lot of trees to consider.

Bob BurnquistAmong other projects, the Action Sports Environmental Coalition unites athletes, celebrities and corporate sponsors such as Stonyfield Farm in an effort to recycle some of the wood used for skateboarding events.

In addition to pro skaters and ASEC co-founders Bob Burnquist and Jen O'Brien, other action sports starts involved include Danny Way, Bucky Lasek, Lyn-Z Adams, Jamie Bestwick, Matt Hoffman and Dave Mirra. Actress Daryl Hannah (who drives a bio-diesel fueled car) also participates in ASEC.

Give Back Good Wood for the HoodOver the last two years, ASEC has sponsored the “Give Back Good Wood for the Hood” program, which dismantles the wooden skateboarding ramps used at such events as the X-Games and re-creates skateboarding parks in disadvantaged neighborhoods. In 2005, the recipients of the X-Games ramps were the L.A. County Sheriff's Youth Athletic League (YAL) for the Lenox Community Center skatepark in South Central L.A. and the San Pasqual Academy foster care facility located in San Diego County .
