A Barn's Eye View of Stonyfield Farm
Founded
The company was founded in Wilton, NH, in 1983 as a project to help revitalize
the struggling New England dairy industry and support family farms. Chairman/Founder
Samuel Kaymen, one of the country's early authorities on organic and biodynamic
agriculture, and President/CEO Gary Hirshberg, an environmental activist,
windmill maker, author and noted entrepreneur, began with an organic farming
school, a few Jersey cows and a great tasting yogurt recipe.
Early Days
In the early days, Gary and Samuel did everything from milk the cows to
finance the business to sales calls and product deliveries. Their efforts
were fruitful, but they outgrew the farm! So, in 1989, the company moved
to our new custom-designed Yogurt Works facility 30 miles away in Londonderry,
NH where we are today.

to do some good in the world while we're at it (see Company
