An inordinate portion
of our laundry machines' energy (around 85%) goes towards heating
its water. In fact, washing and drying a t-shirt requires one tenth
as much energy as manufacturing it does! When shopping for a new washer
or dryer, consider horizontal axis machines, which are more efficient,
and look for the Energy Guide or Energy Star label to choose the most
efficient model we can! Care to learn more? Click

This month's
spotlight on "ordinary" people doing "extraordinary"
things features two farmers whose organic milk is used to Stonyfield

work than producing good, healthy food and taking good care of the
land". Read their "udderly" inspirational profile

Love "Letters"
Each month, we like to share an email from one of our yogurt lovers. Keep
the fan mail coming!
I have been very sick since 1980 - - (I am now 52 years old). I have
had 51 surgeries!!!!!! Probably, that's a record.
In the early 1990's, I had 5 throat-laser surgeries. I had so much
infection from the surgeries and no antibiotics would work on me!!! Luckily,
I had a very bright young doctor, told my family to get me yogurt with
"live cultures" only. I just thought you might appreciate knowing
how the use of yogurt, with live cultures, changed my life!!! Now, when
I have a problem - I don't run to the doctor or the pharmacy, I run to
the grocery store - for more yogurt!!!! I think Blueberry "fruit
on the bottom" is my favorite, with Strawberry running a very close
second!!!

Do
it the Organic "Whey"
On October 21st, the long awaited Congressionally mandated National
Organic Standards go into effect requiring that all products labeled
as organic meet stringent standards established by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture. Now, when something says it is organic, you can be confident
it will meet the high standards set by the USDA.
The new guidelines allow for three categories of labeling organic
products, "100% Organic", "Organic"(minimum 95%
organic ingredients), and "Made with Organic Ingredients (70-95%
organic ingredients)". So, watch for the USDA Organic Symbol on your
favorite organic foods after October 21st! We'll be featuring this new
symbol on all of our certified organic products.

Discussion Forums Highlight
Overheard in our "What you can do " forums:
"When I was growing up, we always composted our food waste (egg
shells banana peels etc...) but living in the city I cant do that. Anyone
know any good ways to recycle the organics instead of just throwing them
in the trash! I feel so guilty when I do that because I know it will just
end up in a land fill somewhere. My complex does not recycle metal glass
or newspapers and that really bugs me too. Got any tips for lobbying
for that?
