Great News for Parents:
Full Fat Yogurt Can Actually Help Fight Infections and Illness in Infants & Toddlers


According to a number of studies reported in 2003, beneficial bacteria commonly found in yogurt can help improve the health of babies and toddlers. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests yogurt as a healthy option for children as early as 8 months old. The AAP Committee on Nutrition recommends full fat dairy, such as whole milk yogurt, during the first 2 years of life. What Can You do about Mad Cow Disease? Choose Organic!
With all of the recent news about the first case of Mad Cow Disease being found in the US, you might be wondering about the safety of your favorite yogurt. Rest assured. According to the World Health Organization and other scientific bodies, milk and milk products are safe!

While the US Dept of Agriculture (USDA) has taken steps to prevent the spread of Mad Cow in to the livestock population and the food supply, there are additional precautions you can take, such as buying organic meats. Why organic? Because organic means that the “product being purchased is fully traceable, has passed rigorous inspections, and, in the case of organic beef, has never been fed any animal by-products in any form,” says Katherine DiMatteo, Executive Director of the Organic Trade Association. The organic production system provides traceability of each animal from birth to sale of the resulting meat. Each cut of organic meat and meat byproduct can be traced back to its origin. If there were ever a question about the safety of an organic meat product, removal from the food supply would be swift and efficient. Additionally, when slaughtered, organic meat must be segregated at all times from non-organic so that no co-mingling of parts or fluids occurs.

“Who's Who” Around the Farm
Carol Chapman has worked for Stonyfield Farm since our beginning back in 1983. Using her extraordinary people skills developed as a flight attendant, Carol started out doing in-store and event yogurt demonstrations for the New England region. Carol has since worked in sales conducting store visits, a receptionist/President's assistant, and is currently the Visitors' Center Coordinator and our Tour Guide Extraordinaire. Carol is the friendly face that has greeted tens of thousands of Yogurt Works visitors over the last decade and is known by some as the Yogurt Fairy!

Carol is very proud that the adorable toddler on Stonyfield Farm's YoBaby Drinkable Yogurt bottle is none other than her granddaughter, Isis. Carol is the mother of five and grandmother of five.

And speaking of cooking try our Corn Chowder recipe – this spicy corn chowder packs a “moo”velously mild punch!

Pumpkin PieIngredients:
6 ears fresh corn
2 medium red potatoes, finely chopped
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon cumin
4 cups vegetable broth
1 1/2 cups plain yogurt
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
First, remove corn kernels from the cobs and reserve. Dice potatoes, onion and red pepper, and reserve. Using a soup pot, sauté onions in olive oil until translucent. Add vegetable stock and bring to a boil. Add potatoes to stock and cook for 8 minutes or until tender. Add corn kernels, red peppers and spices and cook 2 minutes longer. Remove from heat; pour soup through a strainer, reserving vegetables and broth. Place half of the vegetables in a bowl, and gently mix in the yogurt – this will help to temper the yogurt and prevent it from separating. Combine the remaining vegetables and broth in a blender, and puree until smooth. Place the pureed vegetables back on a medium fire, and then stir the yogurt and vegetable mixture back to the pot. Serve warm and garnish with a dollop of plain yogurt.

Yields: 6 Servings
