The President's Pasture
At Stonyfield Farm, we often partner with like-minded companies who offer superb, top-quality products, who show support for environmental preservation and protection, and who are dedicated to giving back. This month, we're teamed up with The Organic Wine Company to offer our yogurt lovers a special deal on a variety of earth-friendly wines that have become favorites among my family and friends. My wife, Meg, and Stonyfield Farm Co-Founder Louise Kaymen have both discovered that drinking these fine reds, made with organically grown grapes and minimal sulfur dioxide, have stopped the headaches they get from conventional wines. The Chateau Veronique variety is a particular favorite at dinner in our house. In addition to the generous discount you'll receive on any purchase, the Rain Forest Action Network will receive 2 percent of the proceeds. Don't miss out on this special offer.

Also during July and August, we hope you'll bid with your lids! The lids on our yogurt cups explain how you can help us direct $100,000 to three organizations that help the Earth.

Bid with your lidThree great environmental groups will receive Profits for the Planet Funds—based on your votes
Join us in supporting the National Wildlife Federation, the Beyond Pesticides organization, and the American Hiking Society's National Trails Day. Through our Profits for the Planet program, we're donating $100,000 to these three organizations, but we need your help in deciding how to divide the money. Each organization will recieveget a minimum of $20,000, but the remaining $40,000 will be divided based on your votes. Bid with your lids! Save the lids from Stonyfield Farm yogurt cups and use them to cast votes for your favorite cause, or visit our website to cast one vote with a simple click.

National Wildlife Federation educates and empowers people to protect wildlife and habitat and is the nation's largest and oldest protector of wildlife.

Beyond Pesticides is a national network committed to pesticide safety and the adoption of alternative pest management strategies which reduce or eliminate a dependency on toxic chemicals.

American Hiking Society National Trails Day promotes physical activity and wellness through trails. The organization promotes healthy lifestyles, connects the general public with trails in their communities, builds partnerships to protect trails, and cultivates new volunteer trail stewards.

Cast your vote and get rewarded, too!

From Romania to Stonyfield Farm and back again!
Nearly 14 years ago, Elena Pintea arrived here from communist Romania, after her 10-day hunger strike persuaded government officials there to give her a passport. She knew no English, but arrived in awe of America's clean air and its astounding shopping malls. Within her first year in this country, she was honored by her then employer, Holiday Inn, for outstanding work. She joined Stonyfield soon after that, beginning her employment by hand-packing yogurt (a process that is entirely automated now). When President Bill Clinton visited the Stonyfield plant, he stood next to her to pack and she showed him how it was done.

Elena also made it possible for her mother to join her in America, but the two of them will return to Romania when Elena retires at the end of 2004. She needs to be with two nephews there, who lost their mother, Elena's sister, recently. Elena's retirement earnings will make her a rich person in Romania, where average wages are about $100 per month, and no one has enough food, clothing or shelter. She loves America and its people, she says, and remembers with fondness the fellow Stonyfield employees who helped her learn English in the employee breakroom by reading out of a newspaper. Elena still reads a newspaper everyday and is quick to remind folks that she passed her citizenship test in 1994 with a perfect score!

Love lettersLove letters
Our Quality Assurance department continuously samples our yogurt to make sure each cup is of the same high quality. Instead of dumping the tested samples, we ship them to a local hog farmer who feeds it to his hogs. We like avoiding waste, and the hogs benefit from all the protein, calcium and immune system boosts of our yogurts. This week we've been amused by a series of emails with an animal theme. One yogurt eater reports she buys 4 or 5 of our large, 32-ounce yogurts a week. That's a lot, we thought, until we see that she's also feeding it to her dogs! Well, that wasn't that surprising—we've heard of dogs snarfing up our yogurts before. But then we got this note: “I've been a client for years. I LOVE the BaNilla yogurt. I buy 4 to 6, 32-ounce yogurts every week. Also, my Asian water dragon loves it, too. She's on a diet.”

Asian water dragons? Who knew?
