Moos From The Farm

Monthly Gossip

We sponsor a team of New Jersey softball players who are out standing…er, outstanding in their field. Managed by one of our veteran sales guys Sheldon Cohen, our team had twelve wins and just two losses this summer—the best record in the Livingston Mens B 35-and-over League—and they won the league playoff championships! A bunch of us Stonyfielders bought community-supported agriculture (CSA) shares this past spring, and now farmer Roger Noonan, from Middle Branch Farm, delivers fresh organic veggies to us right here at work every Friday afternoon. ● Last month, forty-five Stonyfielders participated in New Hampshire’s biggest road race: the Cigna / Elliot Corporate 5K. Some of us walked, some jogged, some walked and jogged, some ran, and we all had fun. ● Stonyfielder Carla Cacavas flew with a pal to LA to attend the Stand Up To Cancer fundraiser that was televised live on September 5th on ABC, NBC, and CBS. Carla was in the TV audience, and backstage too. When Mary Townsend isn’t working as right-hand person to our CE-Yo Gary, she’s often working with refugees from Africa. Mary says she’s been teaching English and learning a little Swahili. And she recently served as the birth partner for a pregnant woman from Burundi.

Organic FarmingOrganic Farming and Farmer Health
Government scientists say pregnant women more than double their risk of developing gestational diabetes when they work with pesticides (mixing them, applying them). When you buy organic products, you help keep farmers safer by supporting agricultural methods that allow farmers to work without the use of toxic, persistent pesticides and chemical fertilizers. A new study from the Stanford University School of Medicine says regular running slows the effects of aging. “If you had to pick one thing to make people healthier as they age,” says the study’s senior author Emeritus Professor of Medicine James Fries, MD, “it would be aerobic exercise.” Read more.
