Monthly Gossip

Twenty-eight Stonyfielders lost more than 200 pounds, collectively, during the first round of our “Biggest Moovers” fitness contest, which began in October and ended last month. At our Yogurt Works, we’ve just installed our newest energy saving system, which captures waste heat given off by our refrigeration system. Instead of exhausting that heat into the atmosphere, we now use it in our yogurt-making process!Sixteen Stonyfielders gave birth to future YoBaby eaters in 2007! (Now where in the barn did we leave that old baby buggy?) ● Last month, we kicked off a new hot lunch program that provides us with hearty, healthy, affordable lunches, and sends delicious aromas wafting through our offices every day! Mmm. Only two Stonyfielders have been with our company for 20 years or longer: our CE-Yo, Gary, and one of our head sales guys, Mark Murphy. Mark joined us around the time when we were moving from our farm in Wilton, New Hampshire to our Yogurt Works in Londonderry.Last month, a bunch of folks from other organizations came to Stonyfield to learn about how we’ve reduced greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. Led by our logistics guru, Ryan Boccelli, the meeting was attended by folks from Dannon, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Seventh Generation, Hannaford Brothers, Ryder, the US EPA, Simply Green, and other organizations.

John Decareau

Stonyfielder John Decareau, who you might see at a community event, giving away free yogurt, is a veteran community-theater actor. John will play the part of Jim Curry in “The Rainmaker” at the Bedford, New Hampshire Town Hall in late March and early April. Break a leg, John! After the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino had to pay up on a bet he’d arranged with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The payoff included 100 servings of our yogurt!

Earth Actions9 Ways to Nix Plastic
Shopping Bags

The production of plastic bags depletes a nonrenewable resource: petroleum. And plastic bags are also not biodegradable, so they hang around for years, looking ugly, causing floods by clogging roadside drains, and posing hazards to wildlife.

Experts say more than one million sea creatures – including birds, whales, seals, and sea turtles – are killed each year by plastic bags and other plastic junk in the ocean. Yet the world still manufactures more than 500 billion plastic bags per year! To learn nine ways you can reduce or eliminate your use of plastic shopping bags, click here.

  Organic NewsClone-concerned Can Choose Organic
By choosing USDA-certified organic food, you can avoid meat and milk from cloned animals, because cloned animal products are not allowed in organic foods.

Last month, the FDA declared cloned meat and milk safe for human consumption and ruled that food labels don’t have to say whether a product has come from cloned animals.

Dr. Chuck Benbrook, Ph.D., Chief Scientist of The Organic Center, says the FDA's decision presents scientific, regulatory, food safety, trade, and animal welfare issues. Learn more
